Background

As stated elsewhere in our web-site information, Ancient Angkor Guidebook has pledged itself to returning a percentage of its profits to the poor people of Cambodia.

We are proud to be a Cambodian company and proud of our nation, which has endured so much over the past decades. But despite the revival of the Cambodian economy and the protracted and welcome period of current peace, the lot of the rural poor of our country has barely changed. Generous foreign aid has poured into Cambodia yet education and health problems still abound in the Cambodian countryside and the years of civil war and genocide have left countless orphans. The curse of land mines still blights our nation and leaves significant numbers of our citizens dead or maimed every year.

It is against this backdrop that our company is seeking to invest some of its profits in charities or projects which attempt to improve the living conditions and education of the rural poor. Our assistance may sometimes be in the form of a money donation to an orphanage, but is more often a gift of practical materials such as clothes and food, or educational material like writing paper, pens and class-books. We endeavour to make all donations in person. Time can be as useful a thing to donate as money and it is always fulfilling to return again and again to a project, renew old friendships and see how the project is progressing.

Support from Our Customers

In general, our attempts to give something back to our nation are appreciated and understood by our customers. Some customers even go further and assist us with donations. While we would under no circumstances expect this we are extremely grateful to anyone who tries to help the poor or disadvantaged of our country.

Projects and Donations

October 2005: Pakha Kol School

A customer from Singapore worked in co-operation with the company to make a very generous donation of clothes, books, pens and writing paper to Pacha Kol School, 40km from Siem Reap. New robes and medical supplies were left for the monks along with a cash donation to help the project and assist in paying for teachers. Many members of the company attended the event and enjoyed playing with the children and talking to the monks and other staff about their work.

October 2005: Khmer Youth and Social Development Project

On the 31st October 2005 the Director of Cambodia Angkor Real Estate Co. Ltd., Mr. Ros Hay, met with representatives of the K.Y.S.D. project to make a cash donation to help their work in Phnom Penh. The K.Y.S.D. project seeks to provide food; clothes and medicine to the children who scavenge on the dangerous Stung Meanchey refuse tip near the outskirts of the capital.

February 2007: Dedication of a New Shrine at Wat Prey Pagoda near Banteay Srey

In early 2007 the Director of Cambodia Angkor Real Estate Co. Ltd., Mr. Ros Hay, attended an emotional ceremony with his family and colleagues to dedicate a new shrine at Wat Prey Pagoda, on the road to Banteay Srey. Work at the pagoda had been paid for by Mr. Ros Hay’s family. One part of the new shrine houses a large, stone carving of the Buddha’s footprint. The blessing of the new shrine was conducted by senior, resident monks and included a feast to which local villagers were invited.

May 2007: Repair of Statues of the Buddha at Wat Prey K’ming

In 2006, Mr. Ros Hay and his family paid for the restoration of 11 damaged statues of the Buddha at Wat Prey K’ming.

2004-2008: The Hans Jensen School, Dei Thmei Village

One member of our company began a school with his own money in the village of Dei Thmei, about 5km from Siem Reap. The school is named after a late family friend who dedicated his life to social and political causes and was, among other things, a fully-ordained Buddhist priest.

Since the school’s initial construction in December 2004 it has been supported by family members and friends from England, by donations from a range of different foreign nationals, and by the Cambodia Angkor Real Estate Co. Ltd. The project has provided a full-time Khmer teacher giving lessons in reading and writing Khmer, and in speaking English. Some donations were used to build wells in the village and many of these have been equipped with water purifiers by the Trailblazers NGO.

In February 2006 the students were taken on a field trip to the Angkor Wat temples where they showed great confidence in practicing their English skills on tourists. At Ta Prohm Temple they insisted on donating the small amounts of money their families had given them for the day to a group of land mine victims.

May 2007 saw the signing of a 10-year Agreement to retain the school within the village. The ceremony was attended by the students and their families and by the village and commune chiefs, both of whom witnessed the Agreement. Cambodia Angkor Real Estate Co. Ltd. assisted in the drafting of the Agreement and one of its officers, Phinn Wanna, was present at the signing.

Also in May 2007, the company’s Vice Director Mr. Ros Thinnon donated a magnificent new blackboard for the school.

Additional funding from England allowed construction of a new building in autumn 2007. The new school building was built of brick and benefits from the latest English language teaching materials available in England. The foundations of the new school were paid for by two Canadian tourists.

Mr. Gilles Zarco, a French citizen and long-time friend of the villagers, provided a small playground at the school in December 2007. He has been a tireless fund-raiser for the community and helped to provide a number of water wells plus a fleet of bicycles for the children. His next project is to ensure that all the families in the village have mosquito nets before the next rainy season.

A new Khmer teacher plus an English-speaking volunteer will begin teaching at the Hans Jensen School in January 2008.
