Art / Design & Local Markets
La Galerie is a unique place in Phnom Penh where visitors can actually meet and mingle with young Cambodian artists. The venue is directed by EM Riem, a painter and designer holding degrees from the Royal University of Fine Arts of Cambodia, the Academy of Fine Arts in Saint-Etienne, France, and the National Advanced School of Decorative Arts in Paris (ENSAD). He will be only too glad to meet you, and show you his own paintings on display along with those of his friends who are working as painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramic artists and designers.
La Galerie is designed to project the image of the creative, impulse, enthusiasm and potency of these artists. Following in the footsteps of EM Riem, the young artists will soon be exhibiting their talent abroad in France, the U.S. and Spain,. painting, a piece of design furniture, a gift item… you will find something delightful for both yourself
and others at La Galerie!

Local Markets
Phsar Thom Thmei
The Central Market, built in 1935-37, is one of Phnom Penh’s main landmarks. It has by far the largest range of products on sale. The market goes by a number of names: The Khmer name is Phsah Thmei, meaning New Market. It is also known as the Central Market on account of its location. The yellow, art deco edifice rises above the surrounding streets and is hard to miss. It has a domed central hall and four large extensions filled with small booths. Everything from gold and jewelry to electronic goods and souvenirs are on sale. As with all markets in Cambodia, bargaining is expected and can reduce prices by 20%. Outside the market are stands selling fresh fruit, meat, vegetables, flowers, fish and cooked foods. It is a good place to pick up a moto taxi or a city bus.
Toul Tompong Market
Known as the Russian Market, it is located at the corner of St.440 and St.163, south of Mao Tse Tung Blvd. It is the best place in town for souvenir shopping. Toul Tompong Market has various things for sale, including miniature Buddhas, silk, silver, jewelry, gems, videos, CDs and (reputedly) ganja, which some Khmers use as a flavouring for soup. It is well worth a visit just to browse. There are also numerous small cafes nearby selling the full array of Khmer street food. Popular local snacks include a boiled egg containing a fully gestated bird embryo (feathers and all), and deep-fried tarantula.
Shopping and Souvenirs
There are a wide variety of items available for purchase in Phnom Penh. The country was once renowned for its superior silk weaving, metalwork and woodcarving. Many of these arts are now being revived. Visitors can find silverware, jewelry, gems, colorful fabrics and silks, wood carvings, papier-mâché masks and copies of ancient Khmer statues. The traditional clothing for Khmer men and women is called a krama. It is a long, narrow silk or cotton cloth, and is available in most markets and shops. Buyers should use caution when purchasing gold and gems.
Soriya Shopping Centre
Located at 136 Street and 63 Street near the Central Market. It’s not quite MBK in Bangkok but Soriya is the closest thing Cambodia has come to a real shopping center and supermarket. There are many floors and the goods on sale range from designer clothing and shoes to flat-screen TVs and up-to-date digital cameras. There are also several restaurants and cafes and a multi-story car-park. One of the main attractions for locals is Cambodia’s first set of escalators.
