Bus Services

The bus station in Siem Reap is a chaotic place mainly catering to local traffic. It is located o¬n a dirt road off National Rd. No.6 about 4km east of the town centre. There is a Sokimex Gas Station at the road junction with Highway No.6. O¬nly buses to/from Phnom Penh and Battambang (via Sisophon) use the station.

Tickets can be purchased at the bus station (the ticket booths are a little way past the “station”), but if you buy them there, you will have to make your own way to the station. If you buy your ticket in town, the bus company provides a shuttle bus to take you to the station. The price for a tuk-tuk into town should be about $2-3. A motodup ride should cost $1. Be prepared to haggle.

Bus Services to Phnom Penh
Buses to Phnom Penh (via Kompong Thom and Kompong Cham) run regularly from 6.30am-2.30pm. The journey time is 5-6 hours o¬n a good road. Prices range from $5.00 - $11 one-way. Contact the following companies for further details.

Khemara: Tel: 063 964 512
GST: Tel: 012 888 981

Mekong: Tel: 023 991 726

Hour Lian: Tel: 023 223 025

Hour Sokha: Tel: 023 992 788

TIP: Bus and Boat tickets can be purchased at hotels and guesthouses. However, they often have an arrangement with a single transport company. Travel agents and street stands sell tickets for different companies and shopping around may save you money.

Bus Services to Battambang (via Sisophon)
Buses for Battambang leave o¬nly at 7:00am, 8:30am and 9:30am. The trip to Battambang takes about 4 hours. The road to Sisophon is still bad, but the road from Sisophon to Battambang is good.

Bus Services to Poipet / Bangkok
Buses to the border crossing at Poipet are either old 25 seat coasters, or mini vans. Some companies run large older buses. Buses to Poipet do not leave from the bus station. Depending o¬n your location and their schedule, the bus company will pick you up directly from your hotel or guesthouse, or they will take you to a collection point. Most of the passengers will be backpackers. Even though they may pick you up at 7:30 or 8:00am, they probably won’t get going until around 8:30am or 9:00am.

The fare to Poipet is $4.00-$6.00, and a through-ticket to Bangkok (Khao San Road) is around $11.00. You will change buses at the border. In Bangkok the bus drops you near the northern end of the Khao San Road and you will have to find accommodation yourself o¬n arrival.

Bus Services to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
There is a direct bus, and o¬ne with a night stopover in Phnom Penh. The direct bus leaves at 7:30am and arrives in Phnom Penh at 12:30pm, then leaves Phnom Penh at 1:00pm, and gets to Ho Chi Minh at 11.00pm. You change buses at the border. The fare is $13.00.

Boat Services

There are boats to Phnom Penh and Battambang. Please check with your travel agent for details.

Siem Reap-Phnom Penh
Boats to Phnom Penh leave from Phnom Krom (11km south of Siem Reap). The fare is $22 to $25. A moto to the boat is around $2.

Siem Reap-Battambang
Fare is $12 to $15. The boat leaves Phnom Krom south of Siem Reap at 7:00AM every day. Daily departures from Battambang to Siem Reap are also at 7:00AM.

Other Local Travel Options

Taxi Services
Cars/ Private Taxis to Poipet can be hired in Siem Reap at the Sokimex gas station o¬n Nat. Rd. No.6 just east of the stone bridge. The fare is $40 for the car, or $10 for a seat. Travel time is much quicker than by bus. Negotiation is required. Taxis to Phnom Penh and Battambang can also be hired.

Motorcyle Taxis
Also known as ‘motodups’, motorcycle taxis are everywhere and any perceived tourist or foreigner walking down the street will be asked frequently if they need a ride. When using motorcycle taxis, always agree the price before you set off. As a foreigner, you will be quoted a high price, and you will need your negotiating skills to get the price down. Short rides: R1000-$2000 / longer rides: $1.

Tuk-Tuks
Even though they are called Tuk-tuks, these vehicles are more akin to a rickshaw attached to the back of a motorcycle and bear no resemblance to the noisy and ubiquitous three-wheeled vehicles of Thailand. Make sure you negotiate and establish the price for your destination before you set off.
